Encanto Park History

Amp Island in 2024.... but in 1937, the city of phoenix built a bandshell to amplify musical concerts at Encanto Park. This structure stood for 50 years until its demise in the late 1980's when the structure was destroyed by a fire.  By that time, the bandshell was in deterioration, scheduled to be torn down and removed.

Encanto Park in old Phoenix

At the end of this essay, readers were allowed to post comments:  here we found a comment offered by our own long time resident, Pat Poulson, who passed away in 2023.  Pat was a great Del Norte Place neighbor and friend' and is sorely missed.  His contributions to the city of Phoenix will live on and always be remembered.

As a kid in late 1940 and early 50’s living near 24th Street & Indian School I would ride my bike to Encanto Park to fish. The lagoon banks were earthen then, unlike concrete-lined as now. I was a fishing nut and caught a 18-inch largemouth bass on my first artificial lure (red & white Heddon River Runt). Never could I have imagined that one day I would be a 30-year resident of historic Del Norte Place on Vernon Avenue, a block west of the site of a significant memory of my youth.
